Adult Echocardiography
What is Adult Echocardiography?
An echocardiogram, also known simply as an echo, is a painless, non-invasive test that uses sound waves to create a moving picture of patients’ hearts. The result is an in-depth, 3-D image that helps doctors learn about the size, shape, and functionality of the heart they’re viewing. This testing method is also considered a crucial tool for quickly and precisely discovering and diagnosing cardiovascular issues. It is a widely performed procedure to diagnose cardiomyopathy, valvular heart disease, aorta, and pericardial disease. The test can be performed on any adult age individual.

Why is Adult Echocardiography used ?
The patient will be asked to get an echocardiogram if the doctor suspects a heart problem. During an adult echocardiogram, the doctor can see:
- the size and thickness of the chambers
- the functioning of the heart valves
- the direction of blood flow through the heart
- any blood clots in the heart
- areas of damaged or weak cardiac muscle tissue
- problems affecting the pericardium, which is the fluid-filled sac around the heart
Doctors use echocardiography for adults when they want to examine the present condition of their heart health, especially if the person has suffered a heart attack or stroke recently.
How is the procedure performed?
The preparation for this procedure is minimal because it is non-invasive and relatively quick. The adult echocardiogram process is conducted by the technician. The patient will need to remove the clothes from the waist up and can wear a hospital gown.
- The sonographer spreads gel on the transducer, which is a wand-like device that sends and receives signals to and from the heart.
- The sonographer begins to move and press it gently against your skin around the chest area aiming for your heart.
- This transducer then sends the ultrasound beam to the heart and receives them as they bounce back.
- As it receives the signals, it records the sound waves, and the computer converts them into moving images, giving you an accurate report of your heart’s condition.
What are the benefits?
Some of the benefits of adult echocardiography are
- It helps doctors diagnose any underlying life-threatening heart problem.
- It gives an understanding of how efficiently the heart is working.
- It is a painless procedure to know whether the blood flow is fine and in the right direction inside the heart.
- It gives an in-depth 3-D image for a better understanding.
What are the risks associated with Adult Echocardiography?
There is a low risk of side effects or complications in an echocardiogram as it is a non-invasive and painless procedure. You can go ahead and book a test without thinking twice
