Endoscopic Sinus Surgery
Endoscopic sinus operation is a treatment that removes obstructions in the sinuses with a small camera. Pain, discharge, repeated infections, obstructed breathing, and a loss of smell may all be symptoms of these obstructions.
Endoscopic sinus surgery restores the function and health of the sinuses by opening the natural drainage routes. Due to inflammation of the restricted drainage routes, the sinuses are unable to drain properly in chronic sinusitis. Nasal secretions can become stuck in the sinuses as a result, causing persistent infection.
Sinus surgery is performed to treat symptoms caused by:
- Nasal polyps and sinusitis
- Congestion in the nose
- Occlusion of the nose
- Sinus infections that reoccur or are persistent
- Tumors of the nose
Endoscopic Sinus Surgery has several objectives:
A sinus endoscopy is intended to increase sinus drainage as well as airflow via the nose. Endoscopic sinus surgery aims to accomplish the following objectives:
- Lowering the severity and frequency of sinus infections
- Relief in sinusitis symptoms
- Increased airflow across the nose
- Enhancement of one's sense of smell
- Nasal rinses can reach the sinus chambers for cleansing and medicine administration.
Procedure
To diagnose a sinus problem, a nasal telescope is placed via the sedated nasal canal. When there is an obstruction, more tiny instruments will be placed in combination with the nasal scope to remove the debris, bone, or overgrowth.
Despite accounts of how unpleasant this treatment was in the past, technological developments have made endoscopic nasal surgery less complicated than it previously was. If necessary, specialized devices are utilized to straighten the septum and minimize the size of the turbinates. The fast and painless outpatient operation can be finished in as little as half an hour.
Preparations
You may need to stop using drugs, oral or nasal sprays, before endoscopic surgery. Patients will be told not to eat or drink after midnight the night before the surgery since a general anaesthetic will be utilized.
Your doctor may prescribe you certain medications to be taken prior to surgery
You may be required to take certain nasal sprays prior to surgery.
Recovery after Endoscopic Sinus Surgery
Mild bleeding might be expected for 1-2 days following surgery, as well as a general sensation of weariness for 1-2 weeks. On average, narcotic and non-narcotic drugs can be used to successfully manage pain. Your doctor will advise you to perform the following after sinus surgery:
- To irrigate the sinuses, use a big amount of saline wash.
- To avoid infection and pain, take your meds as directed.
After nasal sinus surgery, you will experience some congestion, which will go away in one to two weeks.
