Fetal
Echocardiography

What Is Fetal Echocardiography ?

Typically done in the second trimester, between weeks 18 to 24, Fetal echocardiography is a test similar to an ultrasound. It is a process for doctors to see the structure and function of an unborn child’s heart more clearly. Sound waves capture the structures of the fetus's heart, meanwhile, the machine analyzes these waves and turns them into pictures. The doctor can then see how the baby’s heart has formed and whether it’s working properly. The images also enable the doctor to see the blood flow through the fetus's heart. This in-depth look helps to ascertain whether there are any abnormalities in the baby’s blood flow or heartbeat.

Why is it used ?

The most important thing to notice is that not all pregnant women need a fetal echocardiogram. For most of them, a basic ultrasound will show the development of all four chambers of their baby’s heart.

The procedure is done if:

  • The baby’s heart is not clearly visible in routine ultrasound.
  • Heart problem runs in family.
  • If you have used drugs or alcohol during your pregnancy.
  • The baby has a genetic disorder.
  • Mother has any medical problem during pregnancy.

The procedure detects any early signs of cardiology problems in the unborn child. Fetal echocardiography detects the heart, examines heart walls & valves, blood vessels leading to and from the heart, and its pumping strength

How is the procedure done?

Fetal echocardiography is conducted in a dark room. The patient has to lie down on a platform. The procedure is similar to a routine ultrasound that one takes during pregnancy. The radiologist places the medicated, water-based gel on the body part to be examined / belly and pelvis area. It helps sound waves travel from the echocardiogram to the baby’s heart. The waves radiate back giving a clear picture of the fetus's heart.

The person performing the procedure moves the wand all over the belly to get clear images from different angles. The complete procedure takes around 30 minutes to 2 hours depending upon the baby’s heart condition. The baby’s position inside the womb can influence the time of fetal echocardiography.

What are the benefits of fetal echocardiography?

Although every procedure carried out during pregnancy is important. But, fetal echocardiography has its own prime role as it gives doctors a clear idea about the child’s heart condition.

Here are some benefits of fetal echocardiography:

  • Diagnosis of congenital heart disease.
  • It enables doctors to be prepared with necessary treatment before the child’s birth if any problem is detected.
  • It monitors the development of the baby’s heart.
  • The procedure ensures the heart is in its regular structure and functioning efficiently.

What are the risks?

The procedure is harmless to both mother and the child. It is a very safe and non-invasive test conducted during the second trimester of pregnancy.
