Surgery of Nasal Septum, Turbinate (Septoplasty, Turbinate Reduction)
Septoplasty is a surgical intervention used to straighten the inner walls of the nose caused by a deviated septum. The nasal turbinates are three pairs of long thin bones coated in thin tissue that make up the septum. The turbinates can enlarge and obstruct airflow due to allergies, a crooked nasal septum, or other nasal disorders.
As septoplasty is often performed as an outpatient treatment, most patients can return home the same day. Although swelling may continue for two to three days, complete healing may take up to three months.
Deviated septum can be detected in a variety of ways :
A doctor will evaluate the inside of the nose, possibly with a nasal endoscopy, which involves inserting a tube with a camera at the end into the nasal passages. A doctor may recommend computed tomography (CT) scan to reveal a deviated septum, however, in most cases, it is not needed. Following the diagnosis, the best nose surgery specialist will go over treatment options with you, including septoplasty
Are there any other possible reasons for nasal obstruction?
Absolutely. Nasal obstructions can be caused by allergies and polyps. Turbinates, which are lengthy ridges of bone and tissue within the nose that protrude into the nostrils, can also block breathing if they are excessively big.
Inflammation in the turbinates can be reduced with steroid nasal sprays, and temporary relief can be found using adhesive nasal strips. Remember to contact an expert as they will have the most up-to-date knowledge on the best nose surgeries and alternatives.
What should a patient do to prepare for septoplasty?
All drugs that the patient is taking, particularly non - prescribed medications, supplements, and herbs, should be communicated to the doctor. Prior to endoscopic nasal surgery, the patient should discontinue the use of anticoagulants such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, and some herbal supplements. Your doctor should also be aware of any allergies or bleeding issues that the patient may have.
How should I look after myself after a septoplasty?
- On the first day, you should rest. Avoid rubbing or even touching the nose. Even if your nose is stuffy, do not blow it since it may cause bleeding.
- Sneeze through your mouth if sneezing is inevitable. To relieve discomfort and swelling, place an ice pack on the nose and eyes and cover it with a clean cloth or towel.
- Sleep with your head raised on two pillows at night to reduce oedema and congestion. For the first 24 hours following surgery, avoid taking a shower or bath.
- Return to the doctor on time since the doctor may remove the sutures within the nose if they do not disintegrate on their own.
