Digital Xrays
A part of radiography, digital X-ray is an advanced version of X-ray. The technique produces a rapid and digital radiographic image on the monitor. It is a leap in the field of radiology. Even though the technique uses X-rays similar to the routine X-ray technique, the difference comes in quality. The sensors of a digital X-ray machine are connected to the monitor and not the film. As a result, it gives a clearer, faster and more accurate picture than the traditional X-ray procedure.
Why is it used?
Digital X-ray is used to diagnose bones, lungs and sometimes abdominal problems. The common symptoms for which a Chest X-ray is required include chest congestion, pneumonia, breathing problems, cough, wheezing etc.
Chest Congestion
Pneumonia
Breathing Problem
Cough, Wheezing
X-rays of the bones can detect any fracture, arthritis, age-related changes or bony mass. Abdomen X-rays are used in some situations, especially when an intestinal obstruction is suspected.
How is the procedure done?
Digital X-ray is an easy procedure to follow. The technician will ask you to change the clothes to remove any metal artifact. And then instructs you to lie down or standstill in front of the scanner. In some cases, the technician may ask the patient to hold their breath for a few seconds while an X-ray is being taken. It is important to stay still to avoid getting distorted or unclear images.
The entire procedure takes a few minutes.
What are the benefits?
As said, digital X-ray is the advanced form of x-ray.
Here are some benefits of Digital X-rays:
- These are faster than conventional X-rays.
- Exposure to radiation is less than the conventional X-ray procedure.
- Greater image versatility for better post-processing abilities.
What are the risks?
- Newer studies show no risk of radiation in the diagnostic X-rays.
- The procedure is safe and can even be done in pregnant women, if clinically needed.
