ECG - Electrocardiogram
ECG (Electrocardiogram) is a simple test which is suggested by the doctor to check your heart's rhythm and electrical activity. It is a common and painless test which effectively monitors your heart’s health and quickly detects heart problems. The electrical signals produced by your heart each time it beats are detected with the help of sensors attached to your skin.
Why is it used?
The procedure is used to

- evaluate heart-related problems. They could range from mild to severe like severe tiredness, intense pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or fainting
- detect irregularity in heartbeats
- evaluate the condition of the heart before any major surgery. It also helps after any procedure is done to examine if it is functioning efficiently or not
- To check how well heart medicines are working on the patient
There could be several other reasons for using ECG. The procedure provides doctors with a clear picture of the heart’s condition and helps them decide on the future plan of action accordingly.
How is the procedure done?
ECG procedure is carried out in several ways. However, the test usually involves attaching a number of small, sticky sensors called electrodes to your arms, legs and chest. The electrodes are connected by the wires to the ECG recording machine. No special preparations are required for the test. You will need to remove your upper clothing before the electrodes are attached and your chest may need to be shaved or cleaned. The test takes a few minutes and you can go home soon afterwards.
