ORTHOPANTOMOGRAM

What is an Orthopantomogram ?

OPG or Orthopantomogram is a comprehensive scanning dental X-ray, particularly of the upper and lower jaw. The imaging test gives a two-dimensional flattened view of a half-circle from ear to ear. It demonstrates the position, number, and growth of all teeth, including even those which lie hidden inside gums. For a better and simpler understanding, you can consider it as an X-ray of dental science. The test is like any other X-ray involving low-level X-ray radiations to create the inside picture of the jaw (bones and teeth).

Why is it used ?

Orthopantomogram helps the doctor identify the hard tissues of the oral cavity and all-over skeletal structures. Dentists use it to evaluate the overall oral health or detect any specific problem like cavity, tooth decay, and more.

Cavity
Tooth Decay
Root Infection
Cracked Teeth

It is a technique used by dentists to view all the patient’s teeth and count their number, determining their sizes and growth. It is majorly used to detect wisdom teeth that lay low inside the gum.

How is the procedure conducted?

The procedure involves the patient putting his chin resting on a small shelf. It has a dental x-ray machine on its front. The dentist gives him a sterile mouthpiece which he is allowed to bite gently. It helps to keep the mouth and head steady as the machine takes clear images of the inside mouth.

The X-ray machine has a rotating arm. It has an X-ray source attached from one end and a film mechanism on the other. This arm moves around the patient’s head to give a panoramic view of his/her mouth and jaw.

It is a simple procedure that takes only a few minutes to complete with zero discomforts.

What are the benefits of an Orthopantomogram?

The principal benefits of getting an Orthopantomogram done by a professional dentist are as follows:

  • It gives a clear understanding of the number of teeth, their sizes, and growth
  • The report acts like aid to educate the patient about his/her jaw and dental health
  • Involves low-dose X-ray radiations
  • The procedure doesn’t take too long and is a convenient examination for the patient
  • It is an easier test for those who restrict opening their mouths for several reasons
  • It detects if there is any wisdom tooth or dental problem
