TMT - TREADMILL TEST
What is an TMT ?
A treadmill test also called TMT is one of the procedures undertaken to examine a patient’s heart condition. The electrocardiogram (ECG) and TMT are put together to analyze the heart to map out the elevation. The TMT test is performed as the patient walks on the treadmill. TMT helps examine the heartbeat, breath per minute, and pressure of the blood of the patients. You must note that TMT is also known as the Stress test.
The equipment doesn’t necessarily have to be a treadmill. The test can be conducted on a steady cycle also.
Why is it used ?
The purpose of conducting a treadmill test is to determine how the person’s heart responds to physical exertion or stress. It examines the aftermath of exercise, as what effect it has on the heart. It detects any abnormalities in heartbeats and rhythm and is used to diagnose the underlying coronary artery problem. In short, TMT is used to check how a person's heart responds during tough situations like running, shortage of breath, heavy breathing, etc.

How is TMT done ?
The TMT test is a simple procedure of 15 minutes. The examiner asks the person to walk on a treadmill or pedal the stationary exercise bike. As the heartbeat fluctuates with accelerating speed, the doctor monitors the change and analyzes what level of exercise the person can safely perform and handle.
There are certain things that one must take care of while undergoing the test.
- If you are a diabetic patient, your doctors might advise you if you should take your medicine during or before a test or not
- The treadmill is done on an empty stomach. In case, it is performed right after a meal, the patient may feel dizzy and nauseous.
- You must wear comfortable and loose clothes
- Men might be told to shave their chest for the test
